Piping materials for boiler external piping as per ASME B31.1
Piping materials for boiler external piping as per ASME B31.1
(OP)
Dear members,
I am a piping material engineer.
I have questions about a material to be installed in Boiler External Piping (BEP) governed by ASME B31.1.
1. Should ASME stamping, inspection and documentation be required for piping materials of BEP?
According to paragraph 123.2.2 that describes the requirement of piping component materials for BEP,
we can use both of ASME (SA, SB or SFA) and ASTM materials in case the requirements of ASTM specification
are identical or more stringent than the ASME specification.
I understand through above paragraph that we can use ASME or identical ASTM materials without ASME stamping.
2. When I create a piping material class for BEP, should I indicate ASME materials for piping components?
I believe that we can indicate ASTM materials if those ASTM materials met the requirements of paragraph 123.2.2 of ASME B31.1.
Above understanding is right?

RE: Piping materials for boiler external piping as per ASME B31.1
2. Keep your life simple and specify ASME materials for BEP.
The ASTM specifications that are equal to or more stringent than the ASME specification for the grade, class and type are acceptable IF the material manufacturer or component manufacturer certifies with evidence acceptable to the Authorized Inspector, that the ASME specification requirements have been met. IT WILL BE YOUR RESPONSIBILTY to request and pay for these documents for each and every component of your system when you purchase the materials.
Don't be Penny wise and Pound foolish, keep your life simple and specify the ASME materials in your Piping Specifications for BEP and revert to para. 123.2.2 only if you can't get the ASME materials for some components.
That's my recommendation...
