Planes in Toolbox Structural Members

Planes in Toolbox Structural Members

Planes in Toolbox Structural Members

(OP)
Dear Folks;

I have been using Structural Members such as W sections and Channels from my Toolbox.

It would be very nice if these parts had planes of symmetry so you could quickly & efficiently mate these items in a given assembly.

Yes I know you can mate to midpoint of lines and so on in these parts but having having a plane through the center of the web of a W section makes so much more sense to me.

Is it possible to edit the toolbox library parts to accomplish this ?

Many Thanks

RE: Planes in Toolbox Structural Members

I don't use Toolbox, but can you not edit the sketches in C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\Toolbox\data\SteelLib to either move the sketch profile or add ref planes?

cheers

Great suggestion. I didnt think it would be quite so easy. Those files are just regular sldprt files. Since those files are read only, I think it's time I copied them and made my own "toolbox" parts added to and modified to my liking.

Presumably you are using your own toolbox modified in this way.

Again a million thanks

Another thought - If you want to make it easier to add mates when adding those parts, why not make mate references while your at it.

RE: Planes in Toolbox Structural Members

Adrian,
When you make your different Structural Members, try and make as many as you can from the original model or copy of the original model. The reason I say this is because while replacing W section with a Channel the mates will be lost and you will have to repair them. At least make all W sections from the original model.
