SEALED TRUSS DRAWINGS

SEALED TRUSS DRAWINGS

SEALED TRUSS DRAWINGS

(OP)
I HAVE BEEN READING THE VARIOUS QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS REGARDING TRUSS DRAWING SEALS. ON A RECENT JOB THAT I WORKED ON THE EOR WANTED A SEALED LAYOUT ALONG WITH INDIVIDUAL DRAWINGS.  AFTER SOME DISCUSSION IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE ONLY REASON THEY WANTED THE SEALED LAYOUT WAS TO ACCOUNT FOR TRUSS-TO-TRUSS CONX. THE WAY WE GOT AROUND THAT WAS TO INDICATE ALL HANGERS ON INDIVIDUAL DRAWINGS, THEN SEALING THEM. I THINK IT IS STATED IN ANSI/TPI-1 2002, BUT I AM UNSURE IF THIS IS A "GOVERNING" CODE OR JUST SUGGESTION.  ANY FEEDBACK/COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

RE: SEALED TRUSS DRAWINGS

I have had the city of Houston require that a layout be sealed on a few occasions.  They may actually always require it, but I may not see the calcs for it.  I rarely see the sealed truss drawings either, at least for houses.  I think it is just a local requirement, though.

I think it should be required, but that doesn't seem to be the standard procedure.

RE: SEALED TRUSS DRAWINGS

ANSI/TPI I believe is referenced in the IBC and IRC and adopted as code.  The IBC 2006 does not require the truss placement diagram to be sealed unless it is prepared under the direct supervision of a registered design professional.  I think that showing the hangers on the truss drawing is ok.

RE: SEALED TRUSS DRAWINGS

This has been discussed in several threads.  By sealing the placement drawing, you are saying "OK" to the load transfer through the system, even though you haven't designed anything but the individual truss components.

You are saying that bearings are adequate (have you checked the beams, cmu, etc., to make sure they can carry the truss load?) and that loading is correct...you are taking on the responsibility that needs to be directed toward the building EOR, not the truss designer.

If anyone stamps the layout, it should be the EOR, after he/she has analyzed the entire structure, once they've been given the loads from the individual truss seals.

I would stay away from putting your seal on the placement drawing if you only designed the individual trusses and truss-to-truss connections.
