Propane piping

Propane piping

Propane piping

(OP)
Normally gas piping gets smaller as you get further from the tank and load is tapped off the line.  However, due to a remodel and phasing of work, the piping will be larger at the far end of the pipe run than the near end (and will be this way for a couple years).  Is a regulator or other pressure modifying device needed at the change from small pipe to larger pipe?

RE: Propane piping

If you will be having the same maximum pressure in all parts of the piping exactly equal to or less than what you did before, there is no apparent reason to control the pressure when going from small to large diameter.

RE: Propane piping

I would assume that the pressure in the larger pipe furthest from the tank would have less pressure than the smaller pipe that is closest to the tank.  The building department says there needs to be a step down regulator where the pipe size gets larger.  I haven't had this sort of configuration before and am looking for support either way.

RE: Propane piping

Again, like BigInch states, there only needs to be a regulator (AND RELIEF VALVE DOWNSTREAM) if the larger pipe OR the instruments on that pipe have a pressure limit lower than the smaller lines.

RE: Propane piping

Dcastro, good point.  If the regulator and relief was connected to the supply on the larger diameter in the previous configuration, take both of those with the supply when you move that to the smaller diameter end.
