Large assy turned into part models, takes drawing forever to open

Large assy turned into part models, takes drawing forever to open

Large assy turned into part models, takes drawing forever to open

(OP)
I have “saved as” part for 9 large assemblies. Those parts are put into an assembly. This assembly and drawing opens in 1 minute. Now I change a distance between any of the parts and the drawing takes 25 minutes to open.

The files have been “Pack and Go” to my hard drive. Still takes 25 minutes. The PC is used only for SolidWorks, no e-mail, web surfing, no games, and no music. I deleted backup files, deleted trash can, deleted temp files, and defrag. Virtual memory has been set to 4 GB each Initial and Maximum.

Does anyone have any ideas to open large assembly drawings fast? Opening the assembly of part models is about a minute. The main reason we are having such a problem is because our assemblies are built using over 300 mates per subassembly.

Bradley,

How about some detail on the drawing.  How many sheets, views per sheet?  Are there lots of sections, cropped and broken out views, etc?  Are all the views wireframes or solids?

RE: Large assy turned into part models, takes drawing forever to open

I assume you are running XP Pro x64, if so you can increase the VM settings to as much as 16TB. Obviously you should never need anywhere near that much, but you should have at least 1.5 times more VM than physical RAM. Unless you are short on HDD space I would set the VM to 8GB. This may not make any difference and if it doesn't you can change it back, but it's worth a try. Re-boot after changing the VM setting.

I also assume you are NOT using the /3GB switch. Using it with  XP x64 could restrict performance.

cheers

Open them in Lightweight then resolve them to see if the time is better. Using Lightweight mode is the best means of opening an Assembly/Drawing. Trying to understand why something happens is best left to the VAR, but really left up to SW to figure out. Until then, use lightweight and resolve components as needed.

Anna Wood,
I have 1 sheet, 1 view, no sections, no cropped views, no broke out views, only one view to build the SolidWorks BOM. The views are wireframes.

CorBlimeyLimey,
My virtual Memory is set to 8192 for both. I changed it to 12,577, still no help. I am not using the /3GB switch. I double checked to be sure.

Scott,
I tried opening lightweight and the drawing still takes 27 minutes to open after one small dimensional change.

I am calling my VAR.

Thank you all for you comments.

What happens if, instead of changing the distance, you delete the sub-assy and re-insert it at the new position?

cheers

Bradley,

Thanks for the info on the drawing.  Hmmm.... very strange indeed.  Sounds like something is sick in the drawing file if everyone elses suggestions give you no relief..

Hopefully your VAR can give you some insight.

Thank you, all for your replies

CorBlimeyLimey,
I replaced one of the parts within one of the 9 subassemblies. Took 27 minutes to open the drawing.

Anna Wood,
I added a view to sheet two I just created and it took 27 minutes to open the drawing.

Have not heard back from the VAR yet. I e-mailed him the assembly and drawing.

I called my VAR about drawings taking 30 minutes to open. He said “Not Responding” in the SolidWorks header is normal. I should try using a detached drawing and setting my image quality lower. As soon as the drawing opens I will try these things. Every time I click on sheet 2 it goes through its rebuild again.

RE: Large assy turned into part models, takes drawing forever to open

Bradley,

What type of parts are we talking about and how much detail is in the parts? EX..chain sprockets with every tooth shown?

also If I may, Can I ask who your VAR is?

RE: Large assy turned into part models, takes drawing forever to open

I'm sorry, but I don't think that's normal and your VAR is lazy to not investigate this... Call SW directly and have them look at it and complain to them about your VAR. Threaten to leave and go to another VAR usually helps, but not always.. especially if they don't care.

And some of our customers think our support is bad... we always investigate every issues.

I would be a little upset.

Are you opening the files over the network.

Cole M,
The part model is a “save as” of one of our extremely large assemblies. I pick outside edges to create the model from assembly. Our VAR is very helpful (Go Engineer) and he is looking into it. I sent them a zip file of the assembly and drawing. I would recommend Go Engineer to everyone.

Scott
I did put the files on my hard drive with no sign of improvement
