T joint Fillet weld without backing gas

(OP)
Hello guys,
I have a couple of questions.
1-    Is that necessary to apply the backing gas for  root of T joint fillet welds of stailess Steel materials?

2-    Considering ASME IX, is that possible to use GTAW approved WPS qualified with backing gas for a T joint fillet weld, without backing gas? Or we have to qualify a new procedure for that application. The reason is that there is no gap between parts in the back of T joint fillet weld  to apply backing gas and it can touch the root of welds.
Thanks

RE: T joint Fillet weld without backing gas

Fillet welds in stainless steel made with the GTAW process can be and normally are made without inert gas backing. Addition or deletion of the backing in stainless steel in  GTA welding is not an essential variable under ASME IX.
