Elliptical gear tooth profile

Elliptical gear tooth profile

Elliptical gear tooth profile

(OP)
I have been designing elliptical gears in Solid Works and have been using it without the use of gear trax. I have most of it completed but they do not mesh correctly. I believe it is because of the pitch addendum positions. I have seen many circular gear equations, and have modified them the best I can to suit me. Nonetheless they do not perfectly work. If anybody had some equations for elliptical gears I would like to know.
Thank You

How are you going to manufacture then?

RE: Elliptical gear tooth profile

Sorry for the typo error, it should be:

How are you going to manufacture them?

We are going to just mold them. My head engineer had created the mold a year ago, but it was never exactly right. Also he didn't create a drawing for it so I am trying to make a drawing of it. I have been modifying equations for circular spur gears to fit the elliptical, but I can't seem to get it perfectly right. The top land width and position works fine. The pitch ellipse width and positions seem to work fine. (can't prove that) However the base width is the real problem. And no one seems to have equations about that, or else it is not something usually worried about.  So any help that you have would be great.

You need to get hold of this book: "Gear Geometry And Applied Theory" by Faydor L. Litvin, ISBN: 0-13-211095-4. I purchased a copy through Amazon. The book has a whole chapter devoted to non-cirular gears.

What do you mean by the "base width".

RE: Elliptical gear tooth profile

There's a wikipedia article about non-circular gears with some interesting links.

RE: Elliptical gear tooth profile

I noticed that there is a design manual for epicyclic gears.

ANSI/AGMA 6123-B06, Design manual for enclosed epicyclic gear drives

RE: Elliptical gear tooth profile

ops, sorry about. Mixed up epicyclic and elliptical :)
