Hi everyone
Just got my new DELL M90 duo processor it will run on xp sp2. will UG nx3 or 4 make use of the duo? if it does is there anything I need to setup or specify in UG or windows ?
I looked thru the UG documentation and I can't seem to find anything.
thanks

RE: New laptop INFO

In the ugii_env.dat file is this section.  Make sure you have UGII_SMP_ENABLED = 1.  The 2 cores only help in analysis and boolean operations.

#  MISCELLANEOUS
#
#  This variable enables Symmetric Multi-processing (SMP) on systems
#  with multiple CPU's or that support hyperthreading.  Performance will
#  be improved in certain Parasolid operations, such as Mass Properties,
#  Booleans and silhouette generation.  This option is only supported on
#  HP, SUN and Windows NT.
#
#     Set to 0 to disable SMP
#     Set to 1 to enable SMP
#     Unset will take the Parasolid default
UGII_SMP_ENABLE = 1

Here is a thread from the UGS BBS.  A little more informative.

Simultaneous Multi Processing (SMP) is used for Boolean Operations and Geometry
Triangulation.

The main boost is for modelling, there is no significant boost for manufacturing.

Display Rendering is a bit faster, because one CPU can help the VPU, where the other
will do the other work.

We are currently using Dual CPU machines, some tests have shown, that you gain another
boost with Core 2 Duo CPUs, because of the 1GB Front Side Bus.

I hope to get an AMD X2 machine for testing in spring, because they should be faster
than the Core 2 Duo, due to their direct memory access, without the need of a Front
Side Bus.

RE: New laptop INFO

Hi

NX2 support this variable UGII_SMP_ENABLE?

RE: New laptop INFO

Yes, if I remember correctly.  Check your ugii_env.dat file for this toggle.

RE: New laptop INFO

NX back to at least UG V16 has had this variable. Never used it though.

One good benefit of the duo is withing Windows you can assign the ugraf process to it's own processor, so that should be of help and keep the other processes on the other processor.

Within the Task Manager under the Processes (tab) select the ugraf process and either in the right click or from the menu you can assign to processor X.
