SW materials

RE: SW materials

Chris,
Thanks for the materials. Got a to look inside, you did a great job adding extra Alloy materials that SolidWorks does not have. Another star for you.

RE: SW materials

This may be a dumb question, but how do you use it?  Do I rename it as "solidworks materials.sldmat" and put it in the ....lang\english\sldmaterials folder?  Or is it not a replacement for the existing one and I just point to it somehow in SW?

RE: SW materials

Just put it in the same place as the "solidworks materials.sldmat" or wherever your Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations > Material Databases points to. It will be available in the manager when selecting a material.

You can rename it to whatever you want, but it is an addition to the SW supplied file and should not replace it.

Thanks guys.
CBL is correct.
Sorry, I didn't have time to type an explanation earlier.
I would not replace the existing SW file, this one would be in addition to.
CBL a start for the help! ;)

RE: SW materials

Chris,

Thanks for taking the time to create that material dbase.  That was on my "to do" list and now I can do something else.  A star for you 2thumbsup

RE: SW materials

Just as CBL stated Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations > *.sldmat.

When you go into the material editor you will be able to toggle from the default material dbase to Chris's material dbase.  I don't think you can delete the SWx default material dbase file.

RE: SW materials

Thanks for your time and effort.  By the way, are you trying to make mvp on one post?  I don't think I've seen that many stars on one post before.
cheers

RE: SW materials

Does anybody know if you can take Chris's database and combine it with the existing SWX database file. I have not tried it yet, just wondering if anybody else has attempted it. Thanks Chris it will come in handy.

RE: SW materials

If you do edit the SolidWorks database, make sure you keep it safe on the network. The next new install will over write your database on C:\

<<<<< MAKE A BACKUP COPY FIRST >>>>>

You might be able to open both up in Notepad and then cut and paste. But I don't recommend you do that as you will lose the modifications when you next upgrade.

It's very easy to use multiple Material Databases ... their really is no need to combine them.

cheers

RE: SW materials

I store all mine in a neutral location (file hard-drive instead of system drive), along with all custom PhotoWorks stuff, templates, etc.  So if I get a hosed installation (or system drive), all is still well--nothing lost that cannot be restored.

Happy to help.
IMO, the more we help each other out, the better we get and the better the product gets from our input to SW.

RE: SW materials

Has anyone ever noticed how the material editor totally trashes on your page file as you flip from material to material. It appears to be storing the texture info for each material in the PF but it doesn't let it go after you close the editor. The PF doesn't clear out until you close the part.

Expand all the materials and just start clicking down the list. If you don't have a big PF or much RAM get ready to crash as you move down the list.

RE: SW materials

Oh yea.
