744 Amps Chiller without Soft Starter

744 Amps Chiller without Soft Starter

(OP)
Hello,

I am negotiating an electrical installation for some chillers. The manufacturer's catralogue says:

Nominal Power Input: 435 kW
Nominal Current: 744 A

With anominal votlage of 400 V, i get a cos phi = 0.84

I thought that large machines come with soft starters, and that a soft starter would have a pf = 0.98. I may be wrong on one if not on both issues, could you please correct me? thank you.

RE: 744 Amps Chiller without Soft Starter

AusLee; You are confused; a VFD "could" provide a high power factor NOT an SS.  The typical SS will leave the circuit (be bypassed) after the start is complete anyway.

I will also say this question would be best in the "Electric Motors" forum.  A lot of motor guys don't ever look here in Solid State Relays.
