Limits on size for road transportation in the UK

(OP)
I have been asked to check whether a structure can be transported on a flat bed lorry without the need for a police escort.

I have been told verbally that as long as it is narrower than 4.2m then it would be OK, but I would like to confirm that and see if there are other restrictions.

Does anyone know of legislation, guidance etc?  I tried the Freight Transport Association but as i'm not a fully paid up member they are not that helpful.
