PTA hardfacing
PTA hardfacing
(OP)
Anyone has experience with very heavy hardfacing by PTA? layer material - Stellite 6; substrate - mild steel. The height of the deposit is to be 20mm. The width of the deposit is to be 22mm and the length of the deposit is 400mm. This deposit will not be supported on the sides. Each pass will give me approx 3mm build up. I will need to do 7 runs to get the desired height of 20mm.
Would appreciate info re the multi passes, pre-heats, potential cracking etc.

We will use PTA to do it. Crackin is my main concern.

I have to second Arunmrao's comment, an insert sounds like a better idea. You would be able to have a block of metal that can be inspected and then installed.
Does the eniter pice need to be hard? Couldn't this be done with a piece of steel that is hard faced on the exposed sides? Beyond cracks there are other internal defects that bother me (voids, inclusions) that make a very thick weld block look risky.
