Circular groove of variable depth

Circular groove of variable depth

(OP)
Hi guys,

Imagine you have a disk. On one of the faces you you need to put a circular groove, concentric with the disk, with a width from r1 to r2 (radius) and an angular length from ß1 to ß2 (angular). The trick is that the depth of this groove needs to be variable, like a swimming pool going from shallow (say 0 depth) to deep end.

Thanks,
Sorin

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

Sounds like a relatively simple cut sweep along a helix.

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

See if this file helps you out.

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

CBL, Your solution is certainly much simpler.  However, it appears (I can only view the screenshot since I'm still on 2K6) that this method will produce a groove whose bottom is only perpendicular to the axis of the disk in 2 places, i.e. the bottom is not "square".

Oh yeah, you're right, it's quite simple, thanks to both of you gentlemen.

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

Correct ... it would have to be EDM'd or ???
Just offering a potential alternative.

The required groove cross-section would obviously determine the actual machining and modelling method used.

cheers

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

Ah, how to make it is another challenge indeed.  As has been reflected in several threads here, machining a true helix is always difficult.  Using a standard CNC running in a circle while feeding downward would end up with a rounded-bottom groove due to the leading/trailing edge of the mill cutter.  CBL's result could be obtained by setting up the workpiece at an angle and moving the cutting head in an ellipse.

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

That would be done on the 5th axis on a mill.  I've done the very same problem in Pro/E.  Picture a pin that runs in a groove.....ie a bayonet.  I created using surfaces then knitted them together.....then used Surface Transforms.  It took me about 15 features to create this slot.  I will post an image because it's an interesting challenge for SWx.

Here is the part....I've highlighted the feature in RED.

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

'feeling kinda dumb here...how do I view that pic, Heckler ?
When I click on the link, it takes me to mooload.com, but then what?

RE: Circular groove of variable depth

Then download the file.  It's a SWx 2005 file.
