I'm Helping a group of people rember an easy way for remebering the colors of the resistor color code, please repost with your acronyms

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Oh wow. That takes me back.  The one that was taught to me in junior high was "bad boys run on your grass, but vivacious girls won't."

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

"Bad boys rape our young girls, but Violet goes willingly"

was the one we learned in high school.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

"Big Boys Race Our Young Girls But Violet Generally Wins."

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Interesting with these "rhymes". We learned it another way. The colours of the rainbow are known by everyone - and they constitute numbers 2 - 7. It is then an easy matter to remember that black is zero (no light) and that white is nine (most light). Brown (1) fits nicely between blk and rd and so does grey (8) between vl and wt.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

So where was this Violet when I was in high school? ;)

I can't remember what they taught us, but I do remember ROYGBIV (pronounced roy-gee-biv) from my optics classes and the rest is always easy to fill in.

I learned it as "gives" too.....

Don't want to screw up the tradition do we?

I daren't post the version I learnt in school. It was pretty horrible - rapes and virgins featured in it. I hadn't given it any thought in a long time until this thread triggered the memory. Perhaps it should stay forgotten!

I always thought it was a substitute for "comes." winky smile

Perhaps it's a West Coast thing?

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

I usually Use " Better Be Right Or Your Great Big Venture Goes West."

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Let's not forget the tolerance band
"Violet gives willingly" for Gold, Silver or Nothing

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

AFab, "Violet gives willingly, get some now." Get some now for gold, silver and no tolerance band.

Another one we learned was, "Black beer rots our young guts but vodka goes good."

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Oops, Vodka goes well. Get some now.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

I also learned the ScottyUK version, with "rapes" and "virgins" which left quite a memorable impression on this particular young engineering student.

But is now best left in the past.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

For the ROYGBIV bit, I was taught “Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain”

Oh dear oh dear,

You mucky devils.

Bye bye Rosie of you go Birminghan via Great western,

Should also satisfy the PC brigade.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Of course, technically, these are all mnemonic devices.
The acronym is "BBROYGBVGWGS".  smile

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Bad Boze Rots Our Young Guts But Vodka Goes Well

we also learned the rape version above but my high school teacher though this version was more PC with the parents.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

I once and only once saw that the number posters in the induction class at our daughters school used the correct rcc for each number this was 30 years ago,  she is not at all interested in wires but she knows the colours.
I wish every engineering type did.

HAHAHAH LOL lol <roll around on the floor>

Seriously - the original totally Politically inCorrect one works better than any other I've ever heard, partly because it is so thoroughly  non-PC.  And if you come right down to it, it's far tamer than half the garbage on TV at prime time these days.

I just use the one " FlukeWithALeadOnEachEndoftheResistor".

OK , not funny. Somebody send me the "one Best left forgotten". I need a new way to offend my QC/electronic repair guy at work.

Thanks,
Scott

I got you babe

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

My instructor used the "Bad Boys" one, but used the word "Ravaged" instead of raped. It was less offensive (I guess).

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

If anyone recalls collecting green stamps, we learned that "violet gives with green stamps".

kch

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Off topic tangent...
I remember Green Stamps, and Blue Chip stamps. And how the taste of the glue was great when you started out, but you hated it after about 5 licks and switched to a sponge to wet them. My Dad used to go to gas stations that gave out Green Stamps because his company paid for the gas, but we got to keep the stamps. I got my first bike with the Green Stamps I saved up, 40 books IIRC.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

It must have been many years ago, but I have recollection that someone once handed me a newly-manufactured circuit card and asked me to help figure why it didn't work. I glanced at it for about one second, pointed to a resistor and said 'that resistor is the wrong value.' I was right. They were amazed.

The resistors on that card were normally all marked with only the darker colours like brown, black and red. The out-of-place yellow mutiplier band stood out to my eyes.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

I had one I learned in the Navy but have forgotten the last part....

The rest I forgot, getting old

Still with me all these years

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Back in high school, I took Vo/tech electronics.   I learned the mnemonic devices mentioned here, but the instructor also presented a strange method I've never heard of since.

Instead of memorizing a string of words starting with BBROYG...., this system associated each color directly with a number.   This way, to find green, for example, you don't have to think "B, B, R, O, Y, G" and count 1-5.

Black is NO color - nothing, zero
Brown, think brow-ONE.
Red, think TWO red lips.
Orange, think "orange tree" tree rhymes with three.
Yellow, think Yell FOUR help.
Green, think of a green FIVE dollar bill
Blue, think "sick (six) and blue"
Violet, think "violet clouds in heaven, rhymes with SEVEN.
Grey, thing Gray-EIGHT (great)
White, think of white wine, rhymes with NINE

A couple of those are a real stretch, but the whole thing was so silly that I  found myself remembering the color codes that way - despite the fact that I thought it was stupid at the time.

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

But i use it simply as
"B B ROY of Great Britain has a Very Good Wife"
and this is the simplest way to remember i've ever seen...

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

Funny, I just learned to relate the colors to numbers, rather than trying to use some series of words to memorise. After you read a few thousand resistors (like after somebody knocked over the resistor bins and mixed them up) you catch on quick. I hardly even glance at them anymore. The question is "Why can't they code SMD resistors with color?"

RE: Acronym for Resistor color code

...good 'ole USN:

Boys.......BRN (1)
