Possible to weld an axle shaft
Possible to weld an axle shaft
(OP)
Can anyone give advice on welding an axle shaft? I have been told it will break beside the joint where welded.
Would it be possible to temper it after welding to bring back the strength.
Any advice would be appreciated

RE: Possible to weld an axle shaft
Do you know the material (chemical composition) and heat treatment of this axle shaft? If it has already been quenched and tempered or case hardened (either carburized or induction hardened) then welding is not a recommended option.
RE: Possible to weld an axle shaft
It seems to be soft because you can file into it fairly easily. I think the splined ends may be hardened somehow, but not sure about the center of the shaft
RE: Possible to weld an axle shaft
As TVP mentioned above, you must determine the chemical composition of the axle, and if possible, try to have some hardness testing performed to determine the heat treatment condition. Report back with the information and the dimensions of the axle (diameter and location of the failure or break), and we might be able to help you. No promises.
RE: Possible to weld an axle shaft
With today's aftermarket and shipping, welding is unlikely to be a practical solution.
