how to decide the time for case hardening?

how to decide the time for case hardening?

how to decide the time for case hardening?

(OP)
i heard the rule of thumb in heat treatment is that one hour per inch.  I assume this is meant to be through hardening.  is there any rule of thumb for case hardening?

RE: how to decide the time for case hardening?

Are you carburizing your parts? You can use Harris equation to predict the case depth.

For a specific carburizing temperature:
Case Depth = k (square root of time)
Where k is a constant.
t is time (hours) at temperature.
Case Depth is in inches.

Hope this helps.
