AutoCAD Street Maps

(OP)
My company sometimes requires a street map of the job location on our drawings.  Typically we would just search mapquest, or a similar website, and paste that image onto the sheet.

I'm wondering if there is better way to accomplish this, the method I use is cumbersome, not very clear and slows down our computers.

thank you

RE: AutoCAD Street Maps

awomack,

You are aware that there is a huge difference between the GIF (?) files that MapQuest generates, and the vector graphics generated by AutoCAD?

If you are doing stuff in your local city, they probably have CAD files available.  You will have to ask nicely.

I have not pulled the following trick with AutoCAD, but it ought to work.  It works fine with Xfig for Linux.

1. Import the GIF file into AutoCAD
2. In AutoCAD, trace the streets over top of the GIF file.
3. Delete the GIF file.

This gives good artistic results, but not reliable CAD data.

thanks for the reply.  the difference in the file types is the really the core of the problem.

i've considered just tracing over the image, just wondered if there was a better solution.

again, thanks for the reply
