Mechanical properties of an aluminum Alloy at high temperature

Mechanical properties of an aluminum Alloy at high temperature

Mechanical properties of an aluminum Alloy at high temperature

(OP)
Hello,

A specimen in aluminum alloy (6000 series) is maintained at a temperature of the order 400 °C for a few seconds.

What are the values of the yield strength and of the Young's modulus at this temperature level.
I have basic data for static stress values until 350 °C (temperature applied during 30 min instead of a few seconds) but I do not if I can use these data?

Thanks in advance to everybody.

Regards,

Torpen

RE: Mechanical properties of an aluminum Alloy at high temperature

What is the alloy & temper?
To give an answer, I will use Al 6061-T6 data.

Data to 700 oF (371 C) is given in MIL-HDBK-5J. Figure 3.6.2.2.1(a). Extrapolating the 1/2 hr exposure curve to 760 oF (404 oC) gives an ultimate tensile strength of 6% of room T value.

Figure 3.6.2.2.1(b). Effect of temperature on the tensile yield strength (Fty) of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy (all products) is given to 800 oF.  At 752 oF (400 oC), Fty is slightly < 6% of room temperature value for 1/2 hr exposure.  Shorter exposure will be higher, so say 6% x room T value.

Figure 3.6.2.2.4. Effect of temperature on the tensile and compressive moduli (E and Ec) of 6061 aluminum alloy. To 600 Figure 3.6.2.2.4. Plotted only to 600oF.
Extrapolating to 752 oF (400 oC) gives E = 52% x room T value.

Figure 3.6.2.2.5(b). Effect of exposure at elevated temperatures on the room temperature elongation of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy (all products). Plotted only to 700oF. Data suggest that briefly heating to 752 oF (400 oC)  will increase subsequent room T ductility to 29%.

Will use T6 temper values at room T values from Table 3.6.2.0(d). Design Mechanical and Physical Properties of 6061 Aluminum Alloy Rolled, Drawn, or Cold-Finished Bar, Rod, and Shapes:
Ftu, 42 ksi
Fty, 35 ksi
E, 9.9 x 103 ksi
elongation, 10%

Gives the following values at 400 oC:

 Ftu, 2.52 ksi (17.4 MPa)
 Fty, 2.10 ksi  (14.5 MPa)
 E, 5.148 x 103 ksi (35.5 GPa)
 elongation, 29%
