PE Exam Preparation

PE Exam Preparation

PE Exam Preparation

(OP)
Hi all,

Has anybody taken PE exam recently?  I am planning to take CSE/PE this coming October and would like to get a reference list that maybe useful for the exam.  Also, what kind of calculator is qualified?  I am told graphic calculator is no longer qualified for PE exam.  Please comment.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

RE: PE Exam Preparation

The following models are the only calculators permitted:

Hewlett Packard - HP 33s
Hewlett Packard - HP 9s
Casio - FX 115 MS and FX 115 MS Plus
(some models may have a "-SR" at the end, they are okay as well)
Texas Instruments - TI 30X IIS and TI 30X IIB
Texas Instruments - TI 36X (solar)

Visit the NCEES Calculator Policy page at http://www.ncees.org/exams/calculators/.

RE: PE Exam Preparation

I just took the CSE-PE exam this last October and passed.

I used the recommendations on the webpage that xnuke is pointing you to.  If you follow the advice given you will do well.

You do not need to buy every book they recommend, but you need a decent representation of the subjects that those books cover.  I mostly used the Liptak books during the test to check questions that I was not certain of the answer.  The one book I thought was a waste was the ISA equations book.  The one book that was very helpful is the CSE study guide which comes with an extremely valuable sample exam.

In addition, join the ISA organization.  The standards that you will need to be familiar with are free if you are a member of ISA.  Also, download and watch their CSE Study guides, and any other free educational materials they offer.

Plan on studying about 100 hours or so.

Good Luck!

Thanks everybody for the informative replies.  However, I only intend to buy one of the instrument engineer's handbook (each around $160).  Please advise which one is the most useful:

1) Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Fourth Edition, Volume Two: Process Control and Optimization

2) Instrument Engineer's Handbook on Process Measurement and Analysis

3) Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Third Edition: Process Software and Digital Networks

4) Instrument Engineers' Handbook, 4th Ed, Vol 2:
Process Control and Optimization

Thanks again.

RE: PE Exam Preparation

For the test I think Process Meas. and Process Control are the most important.
You should look into used books from previous editions if you are just buying the books for the test.
I used the 2nd edition of Process Control and the 3rd ed. of Process Meas. and I did fine.
You can get alot of info. about digital networks by googling, things like wikipedia, and manufacturer's websites.

I searched for used books at:
addall.com - this one was the best for me.
amazon.com - just out of habit
ecampus.com - got one hard to find used book from here
isa.org - naturally I had to buy one or two from here along with the standards.

RE: PE Exam Preparation

I am going to take CSE/PE this coming October (10/2007) also and am looking for reference books. Thank all for lots of good info listed here.

Where are the best places to buy or get these materials? from ISA, eBay, or some free online download. I don't mind used ones.

Thanks for advice.
