How do I design saddles for large diameter (36" & larger) pipe resting on cross members in a rack?

RE: design of pipe saddles

Hello kbull,

Have a look at AWWA manual M-11. "Steel Pipe - A guide for Design and Installation".  The AISI also has a nomograph addressing large diameter steel pipe design and it includes saddle design.  The great old book by Brownell and Young that addresses design of process equipment (I don't remember the title) is also a good reference.  One of the American Arc Welding Institutes books by Blodgett (either the blue one or the brown one) also addresses saddle design for large diameter pipe.  The weight of the contained product. the pipe wall thickness  and the span will be improtant.  You may have to include "stiffening rings" at or near the saddle if the shear stresses get too high.

Regards, John.
