Renaming parts in PDMWorks

Renaming parts in PDMWorks

Renaming parts in PDMWorks

(OP)
I think I know the answer, but I want to make sure. I've got an assembly that midway through the design, several sub-assemblies were changed. In those subs, several parts ceased to be used. Now at the end of the design, I want to rename all the components in sequential order (we won't go into the pro's and con's of this now smile).

My question is: Will PDMWorks update the references for an old revision, even if the component no longer exists in sub X and is now a different name? E.g. Component X initially was in sub A. After the revision, Component X no longer exists in sub A, but is now in sub B and has been renamed to Y. If I open sub A at an earlier revision as built, will component X (which is now Y) open at the earlier revision? Correctly?

I hope this isn't too confusing; feel free to question me further.

I'm running SW 2007sp2.0

RE: Renaming parts in PDMWorks

It should.  The information tracked for component X within PDMWorks includes a list of all of the component / revision combinations in PDMWorks that reference component X.  In your example sub A revisions 1 and 2 could be on the list even though the more recent sub A revisions 3 and 4 are not.  I believe that this list is used when component X is renamed.

That being said, you may want to create a simple assembly to test it first.  Make TestAssembly which includes TestPart.  Check both in.  Remove TestPart from TestAssembly.  Check TestAssembly in.  Rename TestPart to TestPart1 from within the vault.  Get the original TestAssembly from the vault and see what it part it has.

RE: Renaming parts in PDMWorks

I suggest doing the renaming in SW Explorer after check out. Keep all history in PDMW.
