Generator Bearings

Generator Bearings

Generator Bearings

(OP)
I have several vertical hydroelectric turbines and due to environmental concerns, I am looking at replacing some of the oil lubricated babbitt bearings with water lubricated synthetic bearings.

The existing configuration is a oil bath thrust bearing at the top, then a lower generator guide bearing, coupling to a intermediate shaft.  There is a intermediate shaft bearing, then a coupling and then the hydro turbine with a water bearing.

A proposal has been made to replace the lower generator guide and intermediate bearings with water lubricated ones.  The generator bearing is located about 2 ft below the open generator coils.

I'd appreciate any comments or concerns on this proposal.  There is some concern about being so close to the generator with pressurized water.  The existing oil system is a gravity feed, pump return but the water system will be at some pressure to deliver 6 - 7 gpm to the bearings.

Thank you

RE: Generator Bearings

The benefits achieved by changing to water lubrication will be highly challenged by the humidity to close to the windings. I do not recommend that change for the lower guide bearing, however the intermediate shaft bearing could be OK.
