HOW DO I DESIGN THE BASE PLATE FOR A CANTILEVERED COLUMN. IVE TRIED SEARCHIMG THE AISC MANUAL BUT IT ONLY COVERS A AXIAL FORCE BASE DESIGN. CAN ANYONE SHOW ME THE CORRECT WAY. THANKS

RE: column base design for a cantilevered column

The steel book by Salmon and Johnson has base plate design, as does the book by Blodgett.  AISC also publishes a column base design guide.  I would start with the AISC design guide.

RE: column base design for a cantilevered column

The ASIC publication deals with axial load, small moment and large moment... Your problem would fall under the large moment and they have a couple of worked examples in their publication.

RE: column base design for a cantilevered column

FYI, the AISC publication is called "Steel Design Guide 1, Column Base Plates".

RE: column base design for a cantilevered column

I made a spread sheet from an example by J.C. Smith.  The procedure is similar to the design of retaining walls.  When e>B/6, tension in the bolts is required for stability.

I have the Salmon and Johnson book, but I didn't know they addressed this.  I will have to check it out.
