Jobs

however,

however,

Tech pubs guy at my last place drilled into me that it is alway "however,".

I just had a discussion with several colleagues about this.

Was the tech pubs guy correct or was he, and hence I, wrong?

RE: however,

(OP)
Just realised, sometimes it's "however;", at least Word grammer check seems to think so.

In principle though should there always be something after the word "however".

RE: however,

However you feel, act accordingly.

Quote:

...should there ... be something after the word "however".

Maybe a question mark!
(I'm just joking.)

RE: however,

I never said I knew anything about grammer, guess if I did I wouldn't ask the questionsmile

In your example though it doesn't look like a "," would be appropriate.

RE: however,

In my example, "however" (complete with the quotes) is the subject, so no comma afterwards.

I was responding to crysta1c1ear's example, yours hadn't posted when I was writing mine.

Don't you hate it when that lag happens and you look like an idiot, I'll have to learn to type, and think, faster!

RE: however,

It doesn't matter ... the new word this century is "whatever". Just replace "however" with .... whatever.

RE: however,

The appropriate punctuation depends on usage.

If 'however' is being used to join two independent clauses, (conjunctive adverb) then it should have a semi-color before and a comma afterwards.

He went to the store; however, he did not buy any goods.

Thanks all, my colleague was saying in my sentance I didn't need anything after the 'however' and I was disagreeing.  I was just trying to get a feel for if I was correct in following my old colleagues lead.

RE: however,

For me "however" is employed in the end of a statement or idea that can have aside effects whatever they are

Cheers

RE: however,

However, he is most clever.  However you want it.  He is the better mechanic, however, John Smith is more conservative.  Whatever way you want.  Whatever you say.  Whatever was that thing flying up there?

RE: however,

A friend of mine remembered (probably from typing class) an exercise in which "however" was always ";however," and so he religiously surrounded it with those particular punctuation marks no matter how it was used, with such results as "The data; however, would indicate otherwise."

"However" doesn't have any punctuation built into it.  It's just a word with a role to play in the sentence.
