RE: warnings

So people stop their cars, or stop walking and touch the edge of the sign to feel how sharp. Realise it is not actually sharp at all and then read the sign properly.
A sign designed by a psycho-analyst.
I wonder if that would work with our documentation we are working on..."Title: Don't read this product booklet, it's really crap and will be a total waste of your time if you did look at it!"

RE: warnings

I do recall a message on the front of some software documentation a few years ago that went something like:

"If you refuse to read any of the documentation, at least read this."

RE: warnings

Does anyone know if it's true that HP used to print "OK, now why not try it our way" on the first page inside some of their manuals?

RE: warnings

Thanks 0707 that is the sign I mentioned on the stupid instructions post.

Excuse me for the "plagiarism" but if you want to believe me I didn’t pay attention to your thread on the stupid instructions post, my fault! So after your remark I went there and that is truth you have post:

'Caution, sign may have sharp edges do not touch edge of sign' in very small print it says 'also, bridge out ahead'.

Most of the times one image is stronger than a few words.

The star you gave to me it is yours!

Cheers

RE: warnings

MintJulep, now that's a disclaimer:)

RE: warnings

From the Nelson Rocks Preserve disclaimer, my favorite passage is "We may give you bad advice. Don't listen to us."

I wish I could say that to every client that our Service Department shuffles down to Engineering.

"Art without engineering is dreaming; Engineering without art is calculating."

Have you read FAQ731-376 to make the best use of Eng-Tips Forums?

RE: warnings

As disclaimers go, I like the ubiquitous "Motorsport is dangerous" cover-all that you see on race tickets.

You cannot ply golf but, it is not illegal.

RE: warnings

I am an organizer with a ski club.   A few years ago, I asked ski resorts about issuing club passes, and paying for access to the resort.  This would have saved everyone the trouble of managing trail passes.  The resorts refused to do this.  The trail passes have discaimers with "court tested" language, and they are not allowing any one on their property without accepting one.

An interesting non-engineering read is 98.6 degrees F, How To Keep Your Ass Alive, by Cody Lundin.  There is quite a bit of discussion on how you can wind up dead out there on the trail, or even on a rarely travelled highway.

RE: warnings

http://slashdot.org has a survey feature that comes with a cute disclaimer.  Right now, the survey is about your favorite element, so the topic is reasonably technical, unless you picked Hydraxian Waterlords like I did.

RE: warnings

Picture is indeed worth a 1000 words, hence the gratitude 0707, didn't mean to imply copying.

heh

RE: warnings

Well, I wouldn't put it off too long....

Engineering is great, but it's not Everything:)

RE: warnings

This sign in the bathroom did not inspire confidence in a motel I stayed at...

RE: warnings

"Primitive road no warning signs"

RE: warnings

WARNING:
EDGES OF PAPER AND STAPLES ARE VERY SHARP AND CAN CAUSE PAINFUL INJURY. THE MANAGEMENT ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR SUCH INJURIES.{WINK}

RE: warnings

It's all fun and games till you turn an E or A0 size drawing over too quickly and the corner catches you in the eye and gives you a paper cut on the cornea!

RE: warnings

One funny sign I've seen, visible at the END of a gangway between 2 wings of our building reads:

Maximum bridge load = 2000 lb or 50 psf.

The only problem with this, is that by the time you can read the sign, you've already crossed the bridge!
