Coil Steel Defects

Coil Steel Defects

Coil Steel Defects

(OP)
Hi all,

I went to our supplier today and saw some strange effects on the cold rolled product.

The defect is on 1008/1010 18ga crs and it looks almost like the steel has splintered on one side.  A sharp edge about two inches long and 1/4" wide and less than .005 thick can be picked at and pulled off.  The material underneath is cracked somewhat also.  The defect was not near any formed feature and located in the center of the part.  My guess is something in the coil stock...????

Does anyone know what this defect is and where a link might be to help me identify it and find its cause.

RE: Coil Steel Defects

Surface (de-)lamination resulting form inclusions would be my guess.  This defect may have been in the cast slab and only shows when rolled to light gage.

RE: Coil Steel Defects

SAE J810 is a good pictorial reference on sheet steel defects. It can be found in the SAE handbook.

RE: Coil Steel Defects

Could be:

Sliver

Laps

Hot Tearing

Drags

etc..

Get the SAE spec that Swall mentions, I used to use it almost daily when I was at a secondary supplier.
