My question is whether helical flights used to direct flow in a conventional jacket can be used as vacuum rings to stiffen the inner shell? Referring to UG-29 it doesn't reference this type of design. I would like to use the inertia equations in UG-29 and the pitch of the flights as my (L) dimension to calculate there size. Also, if I have a shell to be designed for 50 psi/FV and a jacket at 90 psi, I would have to use an external pressure for the shell of 105 psi; is this correct or am I exempt by UG-29 (f)?

It is my opinion that you are going in the wrong direction with your selection of HX jacket.
"Conventional jackets" (can within a can with helical rings) are typically used only when the jacket is subject only to modest pressures and no vacuum conditions.They are typically only used for small vessels.

I would change the shell design to the "half-pipe jacket" style.....The ASME rules are well established for this type of design
Yeah, yeah, yeah....I know half-pipe jackets cost more money, but you simply can't change a Ford Pinto into a race car either
