Growler Testing

(OP)
Does anyone know where I can purchase a growler that is capable of testing large rotors? I am needing to test rotors that are 11 to 18 inches in diameter but would like the capacity to go as large as a 34" diameter.  I am also interested in the magnetic paper that is used to show dead rotor bars.  Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks, MB

RE: Growler Testing

Every gr4owler I have seen is custrom made, usually in-house because most motor shops have machining capability. EASA sells a book on how to do it.

Thanks guys, I know the general concept behind growler design and we have built one in the past.  It's toast now and we are in need of another one.  I was hoping that I could purchase one commerically and save the time and resources in building one.  PR&J makes one that is similar to our core loss tester, a 1950 something model.  Good design and it still works, but the PR&J is not big enough.  Thanks for the tips.  MB

RE: Growler Testing

In any DC machine with the fields in good shape, you may use the stator to do testing. Energise the fields with 120 VAC and turn the rotor manually Connect a voltmeter across the brushes. Normally, with the brushes in the proper position you will read zero volts, but any winding faults in the rotor will show up as a varying voltage at the brushes.

Hello mbailey,

One Growler with above  size is very difficult to find and the way is built, Try with transformer repair shops or transformer manufacturers.
