Copy Settings Wizard "...can't copy settings"

Copy Settings Wizard "...can't copy settings"

Copy Settings Wizard "...can't copy settings"

(OP)
Hello,

I can't get my copy settings wizard to work. When I try to copy the settings, I get the following warning and I cannot continue:

Any ideas why and how to fix it?

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but you do have SW closed when you attempt this, correct?  (Perhaps the registry file is being used if SW is open--thus unavailable.)

I do have SW shutdown and I still get that message. I thought that maybe SW wasn't completely shutdown (sometimes the SW exe file still shows in the Task Manager Processes), but I get the error if I attempt to copy settings immediately after logging on.

Are you and administrator on your machine?  You need to have administrative rights to copy the settings.

Yes, I am. I've done many times before, it just started happening recently.

Do not do this if you do not normally edit your Registry. I am not sure it work, but it is worth a try.
Rename SolidWorks to SolidWorksTest in the Software part of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then reboot and start SolidWorks. Can you run swOptions? If not rename SolidWorksTest back to SolidWorks.
Good luck, and your VAR can walk you thru this.

I'm not sure what the results would tell me...If I can run SW Options, what does that mean? Just trying to understand a little more before I do this.

Bradley's suggestion is certainly worth a try (sounds like textbook VAR advice).  Might clear a registry glitch of some sort, which would be replaced when SW is restarted after the registry rename.  Don't hose your computer. ..

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER?

Alternative to try before reinstalling  FAQ559-507

I'm guessing both would work, but the HKEY_CURRENT_USER would be more directly relevant to a users settings.

cheers

Bradley, I was able to run SWOptions. And I've now got default settings. What does this tell me?

Check with your VAR.
I think that your registry got corrupt.
