(OP)
is there a list for the states that have the SE license?  i've been combing the net but to no avail.  I've heard the number was 10.  help?

RE: states that have SE licensure

SlideRuleEra:

Thanks. That is a very useful link.

RE: states that have SE licensure

FYI - I don't think the info for California SE requirments is entirely correct.  I am pretty sure you have to become a civil engieneer first, which requires passing the national civil exam (I got by with the national structural 1) and the state specific surveying and seismic exams.  I believe being registered as a civil is required before you can apply for the SE exams.

RE: states that have SE licensure

structuralaggie,

Page 20 does indicate state special civil exam (i.e surveying and seismic) is a requirement. Requirements on page 52 state that "PE exam in base discipline such as PE civil" is a prerequisite for taking SE exams.

RE: states that have SE licensure

Right, but my point was I think you have to become registered as a civil (req. on pg 20 like you said) not just take the PE exam.  I think the surveying and seismic exams should be added to the list of exams required on pg. 52.

RE: states that have SE licensure

Structuralaggie is correct.  To obtain a Civil Engineer license, you must pass three components: National Civil, California Surveying and California Seismic.  Upon passing, you need three years of qualifying experience under a licensed Structural Engineer to sit for the SE exam which includes: National Structural II and California Structural Seismic (unofficially Struct III).

RE: states that have SE licensure

I know that in CA you have to take these extra exams.

Page 18 deals with the NCEES national exam, the additonal non-NCEES exams on page 20 are required for CA civil.

On page 20, it should have been made clearer that the special exam was for seismic and surveying. I think that was the intention.

Having to summarize the requirements for all those boards is not easy...and I can see where one can easily get confused. For instance, reading page 18 by it self, may lead one to believe, that the NCEES exam is the only exam to take to attain the PE in CA.

Adding surveying and seismic exams on page 52 is a good idea.
