How to specify Self Consolidating Concrete

How to specify Self Consolidating Concrete

(OP)
I've found a bit of literature about self consolidating concrete.  I'd like to use it on several exposed columns, but can't find any really helpful information about specifying it.  The closest I found was

http://www.nrmca.org/aboutconcrete/cips/37p.pdf

which is quite informative, but the specifying section wasn't quite enough.  There are several European or Japanese specs on it, but I'm not sure how they conform to ACI.  In talking with a local concrete supplier, I need to specify the strength and slump flow of the concrete, and that is all (other tests include resistance to segregation, and viscosity).  ACI committee 237 is putting together a guide to specifying SCC, but until they put out a guide to specifying and testing the concrete, I'm hesitant to use it.

Has anyone else specified SCC, and if so, what exactly did you specify?  And what did you specify in terms of testing?

Thanks

If you haven't already, check with lafarge at lafargenorthamerica.com they are usually pretty helpful, and have SCC they call Agilia.

You could also try pci.org, or find a precast manufacturer in your area that has used it.  I remember several plants in the country that used self consolidating concrete about six or seven years ago.  PCI had to scramble to provide information on how plant auditors were to evaluate plant quality control procedures.

Ross Bryan Associates in Nashville, TN audits for PCI.  They may be of help.

Good Luck.

RE: How to specify Self Consolidating Concrete

I am working in a project with extensive use of Self Compacting Concrete. It is a very delicate product, good for our specific application, but I would not recommend its use unless you have to.
We specified
- slump (flow) wich will depend on your formwork and reinforcement configuration
- Strength
- Segregation (there is a segregation index)
- Air content (as per normal concrete)
- Temperature (as per normal concrete)

Also contact the admix manufacturer.  I'm sure they'd be more than willing to help!
