Welding White Cast Iron

Is there a procedure for welding white cast iron with reasonable success?

thanks Dik

RE: Welding White Cast Iron

It depends on what you mean by success. White cast iron is an extremely hard, cast material that when welded upon will degrade its properties. It is extremely crack sensitive because of the type cast structure. The only way I know is to heat this material to temper before welding. Unfortunately, if you do this you loose the benefit of hardened material.

I was aware of the hardness issue... I was just wondering if there is a procedure for welding the material.  I've spec'd methods for welding grey cast that have been quite successful.

No, not without affecting the intended bulk properties. Welding gray cast iron can be done using various approaches.

You might have better success with brazing (brass filler rod). However, you still would likely develop unfavorable residual stresses which could lead to failure.
