Diesel Genset for Class 1, Div. 2
Diesel Genset for Class 1, Div. 2
(OP)
I am looking for a new diesel generator, 160kW, UL rated for operation in a hazardous area, Class 1 Division 2 as defined by the NEC.
CAT was approached, but since the profit margins may be rather narrow on this type of unit, the response has been somewhat dismal.
Anyone have any contacts for OEM's or third party mod shops that can produce this type of unit (UL certified)?

Neither are the generator ancilliaries such as the AVR, and the circuit card which provides automatic start and engine monitoring and shut-down.
Alternators themselves are not generally constructed in explosion proof versions.
As davidbeach suggested, move the unit to a non-hazardous area.
Under the Canadian code, any electrical equipment used in a hazardous area must be certified, regardless of voltage. This includes such equipment as flashlights, multi-meters, sound powered telephones, tachometers, pagers and other equipment.
Don't forget the anti-condensation heater and the coolant heater.
Then there is the issue of hot exhausts and turbos.
Your only hope may be to enclose the generator in a pressurised housing, and apply for special permission.
However, if you have space for the collection of fresh, non-hazardous air and the associated blower and filters, you may be able to just mount the genset there in the first place.
respectfully
