Ordering trusses

Ordering trusses

Ordering trusses

(OP)
So my in laws have this detached garage that has flat roof on it.  It is sagging due to the snow.  Since their son in law is a structural engineer, the told me to do some calculations.  I found out that the 2x10 @ 12" is undersized (for both strength and deflection).  The scariest thing is the header. The roof rafters are sitting on (2)-2x12 headers.  This header is wayyyyy undersized.  I told them that I cant believe the roof is still standing.  The wall is CMU wall btw.

So I told them I will write a report and calc so they can get the building permit.  However, I need to know in situation like this, if they want to replace the roof with trusses (front gable roof) what do you think they should do?

Is there a truss company that will install both trusses and the roof also so they dont have to hire a contractor?  Or do they usually just deliver them to the site?  Do you think for a 2 car garage we need a crane to install it?  Will the truss company provide that?  Is it light enough for a 3 men crew to do it without a crane?  I'm not a contractor/builder so I dont know what steps they need to take.  I am trying to help them so they dont have to hire an architect.  They just want to do it as economical as possible.  Thanks!

RE: Ordering trusses

Trusses weigh about 5 plf and for small spans, they can be hoisted in place by a couple of people... You shouldn't need a crane...

RE: Ordering trusses

Some truss companys have install crews, some don't.  Check with the local truss manufacturers in your area.  Don't need a crane unless your wall height is unusually tall.

RE: Ordering trusses

A group of about 3-4 people could install garage trusses. Even getting a contractor to do it would be pretty cheap considering it'd take them a couple hours from arrival to decking it. Then you can do the roof finish yourself.

I know our company has an installed sales division that can offer the services you are looking for. Just have a look around at the local truss companies.
