Fluorine Compounds ans Stainless Steel

Fluorine Compounds ans Stainless Steel

Fluorine Compounds ans Stainless Steel

(OP)
Does anyone have references which detail the problems of austenitic stainless steels and fluorine compounds?
I have an aluminum smelter client who was attempting to change from carbon steel to austenitic stainless for a gas scrubber from the anode bake ovens.  The gas contains all sorts of nasties like HF (and other fluoride compounds), SO2, NOx, CO2 and is at a temperature of minimum 150C.
My immediate thoughts were internal Stress corrosion cracking and general corrosion with the possibility of external stress corrosion cracking under insulation.
I have to prove that the combination of flouride compounds would probably cause stress coorrosion cracking internally.
By the way, the original carbon steel scrubber was 25 years old.

RE: Fluorine Compounds ans Stainless Steel

I have references for low levels of F that show it acts like Cl, or a little worse.  I have no data in high concentrations of F salts.  Now I am going to have to look around.
Off hand I like your gut feel, go back with CS.  In fact if you find a grade with just a little bit of Cr you may even do better.
