how to move part origin

how to move part origin

how to move part origin

(OP)
Hi - I've been using SW for a couple of months and really like it.  Unforunately, early on I created a model of a part with a bad origin (i.e. not centered).  I'd like to fix this by moving the origin (or alternatively, move every sketch in the part the same offset simultaneously.  I can't figure out how to do it.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

RE: how to move part origin

Go back to first feature you created.
Most commonly a base-extrude.

Edit Sketch and remove relations and reassign.

Hope this helps you.

RE: how to move part origin

The origin does not move.  Consider it the point that defines all other points in relationship to it.  What you can do is use the move/copy body command to move a solid body to the exact place you desire relative to the origin.  If you are using 2006 and later, there are even mate commands to help you orient your solid body.

RE: how to move part origin

You can go back to the original sketch that made the part and you can remove any relations to the origin and use the Sketch Tools -> Move command.

Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

RE: how to move part origin

The only problem with scorch's and BSME's method is that it may very well affect features further down the feature tree.  It would then require some rework of the model.  The method I mentioned could avoid that, altough may be less elegant than if the model had been started and maintained at a more logical reference to the origin in the first place.  But that is how we learn.

RE: how to move part origin

Or you can use the Move/copy body command. - see help for details
