Relationship between pH and Alkalinity

Relationship between pH and Alkalinity

Relationship between pH and Alkalinity

(OP)
Greetings, and all the best in this new year...

I just wanted to know whether there is a definite relationship between pH and Alkalinity. I'm sure they are related but do not know the exact nature of this relationship. Thanks in advance...

RE: Relationship between pH and Alkalinity

You might want to read "Water Chemistry" by Snoeyink and Jenkisn to gain insight on alkalinity, pH and carbonate species equilibrium. There are likely other texts that address the subject well. You can also goolge on carbonate chemisty and find good discussions of the subject.

Master this subject and you will be on your way to being a very good water treater.

RE: Relationship between pH and Alkalinity

It is possible to have a very high or very low pH while the alkalinity or acidity is very low. This would happen, for example, if a small quantity of acid or base were dissolved in pure water. Similarly, in highly buffered water, you can add a lot of acid or base with very little pH response.
