Surge analysis / Calculatios - Urgent need

Surge analysis / Calculatios - Urgent need

Surge analysis / Calculatios - Urgent need

(OP)
Dear friends ,

Can you please help me in getting enough technical information for calculating and making surge analysis at one of the water booster stations (operating pressure 40 bar).

If someone can send me any technical data or methods for calculating the surge value . it will be highly appreciated if there is any data in PDF files.

I need this information very soon as the designer for the station did not consider any surge effect in his design and I need to check if the pressure rate for pipes and fittings will withsatnd the predicted surge value.

Thanks alot for all your help.

Water Hammer and Mass Oscillation (WHAMO)

Program is free and has been supported by the USACE for some time.  It was originally developed at MIT.  The only problem you may have is that the program user interface is a little awkward.

PS  The program and documentation are no substitute for experience.  Also think about pipe supports and the loading that may occur from surges.

Hey BigInch,

My company's firewall doesn't like your sight too much. LOL
I'll turn it in as an error.

Ya.  I don't like it either.
I've gotta get a real web site set up.  Its on my todo list for 2007.

I suppose I should remove the dirty pictures, but with pipeline work, its hard to avoid getting dirty.

I've submitted it to our IT group for review and re-classification. Sometimes I think it's the host site that draws the flag and not the individual's webpage.

RE: Surge analysis / Calculatios - Urgent need

Our IT department initially had the firewalls loaded to where all sorts of alarms went off in the corporate offices at the slightest (perceived) indiscretion.  Being in petroleum refining, we went out of our way to mess with them by searching for information on tank dikes, pipe nipples, cock valves, peckerheads, female fittings, orifice flanges...great fun.

RE: Surge analysis / Calculatios - Urgent need

Ya.  Its not my page in particular.  Its the MSN host site.  There are lots of "personal" type pages.

dtn, that's great.  Don't try vacuum pumps or use + "down hole" descriptors either.

BOS Fluids by PAULIN RESEARCH GROUP www.paulin.com

BOS Fluids is an engineering software package that analyzes fluid transients in pipe systems and relates this information back to the mechanical piping system transferring the fluid.

For years, piping engineers have labored with simplifying hand methods, cumbersome analogue computers, or user-unfriendly software products when needing basic steady state and transient fluid analysis capability.  BOS Fluids is written specifically to address the needs of the piping engineer for fluid reaction forces, and to provide a system whereby the fluid simulation results can be easily integrated back into the piping system design and analysis.

BOS Fluids is an interactive computer simulation package that models steady state and transient flow in liquid or gas carrying piping systems. The procedure is easy to use and interfaces with most pipe stress programs. The package contains the elements required to model most common unsteady flow conditions. The elements included in the simulation package are pipes, valves, pressure relief valves, vacuum breaker, air valves, pumps, equipment, surge vessels, inlets, outlets, and orifices. BOS Fluids makes fluid simulation simple and easily accessible and yet gives the analyst pressure transients and dynamic force results with an engineering accuracy.

The present friction model used in BOSFluids is Colebrook-White. The Darcy-Weisbach flow model is used for steady state pressure drop calculations and the basic theory applied in BOS Fluids can be found in Wylie & Streeter's "Fluid Transients" published by FEB Press. BOS Fluids is capable of simulating both the steady and transient behavior of liquid carrying closed conduit systems of pipes, valves, pumps and surge relief devices.

Typical analyses using BOS Fluids include:

Water Transmission and Distribution Systems

Main Cooling Water Systems for Chemical Plants

Sewage Water Systems

Combined Power and Drinking Water Cycle Power Stations

Oil Product Transport Lines

Tanker Loading and Unloading Systems

Dynamic Behavior of Chemical Liquid Transport Lines

Acoustic Analyses for Compressors and Pumps

RE: Surge analysis / Calculatios - Urgent need

There are many such programs out there.

I use two myself: Flowmaster and pipeline studio. But so far i have not mentioned this because its not relevant in an urgent request since you cannot lear to use these program "urgently" and they usually also have a pretty big price tag (OK 4500 US$ is fairly low in this business but anyway). Thus you must also offer consultancy services - and this is against the rules of this BBS.

Best regards

Morten
