DC motor control question

DC motor control question

DC motor control question

(OP)
I have a small piece of equipment in the plant. It currently has a 1/8 hp dc motor with 5 leads that go back to a small speed control board. Wires terminate on the armature and field terminals of this board. Now, we need to install a new motor however, when they spec'd it out they purchased  a 1/8 hp dc permanent magnet motor and hence, there is only a ground wire and two armature wires coming out of the motor. I was wondering if this controller would work for the new motor or do we need a new controller. If we can use the same one then what do we do with the field terminals on the board ( put a jumper in there ? ) Thanks for the help.

RE: DC motor control question

NO - dont put a jumper in there! That will possibly short out your rectifier and cause some interesting phenomena.

You should probably leave them unconnected and insulated. There is a rather fat chance that there is an internal field current supervision in your controller. Sometimes as simple as a relay coil where excitation current passes to activate the supervision circuit and sometimes less visible. You mat also have no supervision at all. Easiest way to find out is to connect armature and ground of the new motor and give it a try. Make sure that it has a similar voltage range as your old motor (do not use a 12 or 24 V motor if the previous one was 110 or 240 V or something like that.

And - please - do not jumper the field supply!
