floating lid for cylindrical tank

floating lid for cylindrical tank

floating lid for cylindrical tank

(OP)
A cylindrical steel tank which is part of a process cycle with about 250l Volume about 2m high and 45cm in diameter needs to be sealed to atmosphere. The system is not pressurised.
Depending on the process the tank is filled with different liquid levels. E.G. filled 1.2m or 1.6m or 1.8.....)
Between the free liquid surface and the lid there should be no gap.

Does anyone now some equipment which acts as a kind of floating lid. (A little bit similar to the movable gas storage tanks) I looked on the internet but I was not able to find anything. Ideally The lid should float on the liquid surface. When the liquid expands due to temperature change (temperatures can change from 20 to 80°C)the lid should move also. There should be no gap between cylindrical tank wall and lid in order to avoid los of liquid due to evaporation. I could invisage kind of O-rings which are inflatable. Does anyone know whether such an device exist, what is the product name are there supliers.

RE: floating lid for cylindrical tank

What about a lid with rubber accordian style bladder around the edges, attached to the sides.

FACS,
what do you mean with rubber accordian style bladder. Is this kind of inflatable. can you explain a little bit more in detail. Is there a supplier?

RE: floating lid for cylindrical tank

Although its not exactly what you are looking for, you may want to consider checking out Graco.com. They specialize in pumps which draw liquids directly from drums and pressure vessels using a flange assemble with an inflatable o-ring seal.

RE: floating lid for cylindrical tank

To avoid any evaporation, I think you'd need some sort of bladder type tank.  You could make a floating lid without too much problem, but a lid that size would have little buoyancy, so you couldn't make the seals very tight at all- and would have to expect some leakage of vapor.
