MWD/LWD
(OP)
Hi all,
Well I have an old friend that’s been a MWD for a while we both were commercial electricians. I am thinking about making the same change and would like to get as much information as I can. I now work as an international superintendent so my family is ok with the traveling. Being that I have no experience in this field can anyone give me any tips on what I can do to speed up my chances of becoming a MWD
I have computer skills, A CDL, and much electrical experience
Thanks

RE: MWD/LWD
The best way is for your friend to introduce/ recommend you for an opening at his company. Why not? In this industry word of mouth matters a bit. Else look out for the job opportunity pages at the oil and gas service companies.
You will also need to have the mental appitude to be away from family for long hitches, stressful but most challenging working environments. Working off-shore on an oil rig where all round is just water. Some safefy issues- e.g. well blowouts, etc. but this is of course at the extreme spectrum.
Personally, now that I am out of the oil and gas upstream sector what I miss is a lot is the professionalism of the men, the work challenge and the no-nonsense approach. To a lesser extent, the financial rewards- day rates are just getting better with the proce of oil so high.

Well an international superintendent is a person that works out of town for 4 month with only 4 day total of down time. I would fly out on a Friday after work around 5:00 pm get home around 8:00 pm have all day Saturday with my family and then fly out Sunday AM to be on the job come Sunday night at 9:00 pm, I’ve been doing this type of work for two years now. This job required me to supervise all sub’s electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC, low voltage, etc which at times was very stressful. The construction work was for Wal-Mart and Sam’s club remodels. These jobs were 24 hour jobs so some days I would work all night and have inspections during the day. My goal now is to become a directional driller starting of with a MWD position I feel after doing the above described job I can handle anything except a blowout ? Thanks for all the tips. I hope one day we all may cross path.
