ZDDP is a widely used additive. It is zinc dialkyl (or diaryl) dithiphosphate which has anti-wear, antioxidant and corrosion-preventing properties.
This and other dialkyl dithiophosphates are prepared by reacting PS5 with an alcohol to form the intermediate dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid, which is then neutralised by a metal oxide (zinc's or otherwise).
The properties of the product depend on the metal atom and the alkyl group.

The empirical formula of the pentasulfide should be P2S5.

Concerning their chemistry, hydraulic fluids can be divided into four classes (i)mineral oil based, (ii)synthetic lubes, (iii)emulsions, and (iv)water-based fluids.
Organophosphorus compounds, and among them the multi-functional ZDDP is used in formulations of motor oils and anti-wear hydraulic lubricants. The response pattern of the ZDDPs is strongly influenced by the degree of raffination of the base stock.
There are ZDDP-free ashless additives, and those with ZDDP containing calcium detergents for improved thermal and hydrolytic stability of the ZDDP. Environmental regulations may bring about a change to ashless technology. Hydraulic fluids designed for the food and pharmaceutical industries require products that comply with specific regulations.
Overall high performance fluids contain 0.9-1.2% additives.
Formulations are known to contain up to seven additives depending on performance requirements. For example, when extremely low sludge figures are required, the use of dispersant VI-improvers may be considered.
If the ZDDP is Zn di-2-ethylhexyldithiophosphate, aminic or phenolic antioxidants are added to boost the oxidation stability.
