Saving files in office 2003

Saving files in office 2003

Saving files in office 2003

(OP)
Every time I open a file in Word or Excel 2003 and then save it I get this dialog box that says:

The file may have been changed by another user since you last saved it.  In that case, what do you want to do?

* Save a copy
* Overwrite changes

It defaults to save a copy which is never what I want to do.  Office 2000 did not do this.  How do I make it just save the file without popping up this annoying little box?

RE: Saving files in office 2003

Look for the advanced tab on the SaveAs dialog box; there must be some kind file sharing option checked that allows multiple users write access to the file. Because it is happening with every file, check your Tools --> Options settings too.

There is no advanced tab on the SaveAs dialog box.  I see nothing in the tools/options related to file sharing.  I'm using Office2003 on WindozXP SP2.  My previous workstation had Office 2000 on Windoz2000.  All the files are on network servers which have not changed nor has my login.

RE: Saving files in office 2003

Sorry, I was using a Linux machine when I originally replied.  In Office 2003 you go to the Tools menu (top right hand corner) of the SaveAs dialog box and then to Properties. On th e General tab of the box that pops up, the Read-only option should have a green square in it. Go to the Security tab and check if there's anything funny on that, too. If you hit Advanced on the Security tab and go to the Owner tab of the new window, you can take ownership of the files.

It's not a BUG it's a FEATURE!  How on earth did MS come up with QFE_Saskatchewan for a registry entry?  Set it to 2 and the problem seems solved.  Didn't even require a reboot.  That is truly bizarre.  I don't think they can blame it on network latency, I'm on a direct Gbit Ethernet connection to the server.  And no Services for Macintosh.  Just good old MS moth in the wires.

Thanks Tony!

Dave,

I almost put "feature" in quotes, but I didn't want to make it that obvious!
