Through Bolts

Through Bolts

Through Bolts

(OP)
I came across a situation a while ago where I was required to support a temporary structure on through bolts. These bolts actually passed through holes that were bigger than the bolts.

I was concerned whether to design the bolts for shear, bending and bearing. The bending requirement increased the size quite a lot and in the end I used high strength bars to enable me to keep the diameter within the limits of the hole.

The structure performed well and has now been dismantled.

Would anybody approach the task differently and in particular would you design bolts for bending?

RE: Through Bolts

I think you are right in designing the bolts as beams, in this case.

RE: Through Bolts

It depends. If to concrete, first an anchor plate, then whatever the load originates. If it generates tension, include it. If bending, as well. And if close fitting and the other actions can be thought prevented, shear would be enough.
