Solidworks sweep along a spline

Solidworks sweep along a spline

Solidworks sweep along a spline

(OP)
I imported a model (.igs file) into solid works. I completed a sketch around the contour of the part using the spline option in the sketch mode. On the end of this spline I created a square as another sketch. I want to "sweep" this square down this spline. Solid works gives me the following error "This feature would create a disjoint body". How can I fix this problem? If you have any ideas please help. I would appreciate any help.

RE: Solidworks sweep along a spline

I assume you're doing a swept cut.  If not, then totally disregard the wisdom that I'm about to impart.  I've had this error come up as well, seemingly without reason, but there is a work-around.  Create a new solid body with a swept boss then do a subtract feature.  That should get you where you need to go.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip Dan. However, I'm not doing a cut.

RE: Solidworks sweep along a spline

It's probably failing due to the edge of the square only touching the original body at the corner.  See if you can overlap the square section with the body.

If you change the square to a small circle, does the sweep then work? If it does, then your spline may have too tight a radius at one or more points.

Thanks for all of your help. However I believe I'll try a new approach.

What I'm trying to do is create a model above the imported .igs file. I need the model above the imported to be the same contour. This final model will be used to cut a die for gating. Any tips I would again appreciate. Thank all of you for your kindness.

RE: Solidworks sweep along a spline

If you can, post an image (FAQ559-1100) or the file (FAQ559-1177) so we can see what you are actually trying to acomplish.

cheers

RE: Solidworks sweep along a spline

If the sweep needs to follow the igs maybe creating an intersection curve of this igs contour will allow you to avoid having to create your own spline, and it may be more suitable for a sweep.

But as CorBlimeyLimey suggested an image would get us all on the same footing.

Happy New Year.

Thanks for all of the tips.
