Importing IGES model into ANSYS

Importing IGES model into ANSYS

Importing IGES model into ANSYS

(OP)
Hello,
I have attempted to import an IGES (assembly) model into ANSYS 5.7.  My assembly consists of 2 components which were originally fixed in relation to each other (and in space).  However, when I import this iges file into ANSYS, my two components are no longer aligned correctly since there is a shifting and rotating of one of the components.  Could someone supply me with any advice/solutions as how to avoid this? This occurs with both the "Defeature" and "No Defeature" options.  Also, the IGES model was originally created in CATIA 5.7 (and I do not have the "connector packs")
Thanks, Gill

RE: Importing IGES model into ANSYS

I'm guessing here, so I may be wrong. However, I have seen this behavior before under similar circumstances . . .
CAD frequently has a master "part" file, and then repositions it from that master.  An example is tires on a car.  Instead of 4 separate files, there is one file, and then there are 4 repositionings of that file (translation and rotation).  I have in the past gotten igs data from CAD people which was the "master" file, and which hence did not match up with other geometries to which it connected.  You should check with your designer and see if this is the case. If so, then either get a repositioned model, or else get the relevant translations and rotations, and move the part in your CAE model.
Hope this helps.
Brad

RE: Importing IGES model into ANSYS

Hi,
i have heard from many sources, that CATIA's IGES export option does not work well, so you may wait till release 8 or do following (i am self not sure): export it in to CATIA 4 and from there export it again as IGES. Good luck!
