Bent plate section properties

Bent plate section properties

Bent plate section properties

(OP)
Where can I find formulas for calculating section properties ( radius of gyr, MOI etc.)of bent plates?

I need to calculate compression capacity of steel plate bent at 60 degrees in the shape of "V or U".

Any online source will be great.

Thanks

RE: Bent plate section properties

Formula?  Open your mechanics of material book.  V shape you can find the moment of inertia of a big triangle, minus smaller triangle.  U, will probably be a lot harder to do doing it by hand.  I do have Risa Section that will calculate whatever custom section you have.

RE: Bent plate section properties

autoCAD will calculate the section properties.  You will need to have the centroid of the section positioned at the origin of the coordinate system.  I have used it in the past with great success.

As with any program, you need to know how to do it by hand before using ia program to calculate the properties for you.

RE: Bent plate section properties

Risa Section, you just need to know how to draw  smile .  It will give you Ix, Iy, and weak axis I which is pretty hard to do by hand if you have a non symetrical section.

RE: Bent plate section properties

yeah, even us licensed architects had a semester of Mechanics...don't they teach that anymore in engineering school?

RE: Bent plate section properties

Follow the link below and the spread sheet "SECTPROP.XLS" would do what you want.

RE: Bent plate section properties

Try "thin walled section" spreadsheet at www.yakpol.net

RE: Bent plate section properties

Ive been using Yakpol's spreadsheet for a few years now. Its excellant!

RE: Bent plate section properties

If your plates are thin, then you need to calculate properties according to AISI's Cold Formed Steel Design Manual.  The manual has detailed methods for calculating properties of bent shapes, taking into account buckling characteristics of thin sections.
