No axe of revolution

No axe of revolution

No axe of revolution

(OP)
Hi,

I want to make a helical cutout inside a tube (a spiral spline)

After making the tube i click the helical cutout button and start drawing the cutout on the plane at the end face of the tube, I than have to click the axe of revolution button and select a line in order to make the the axe of revolution.

But there is no line to select !! What am i doing wrong ?

There must be a centerline going through the length of the tube body, but why cant i make it visible ?

thanks Anthony

RE: No axe of revolution

Hi,

is there any reason to draw the sketch for the cutout on
the end face?
Normally to get the helical coutout inside the tube I
would go like this:

- assuming that the tube is constructed on the x/z plane
  and centered at 0,0 point
then

draw the sketch for the cutout on the y/z plane and use
the Y ref-line as axis (thats the horizontal line).

SE has no function to draw a true spiral (i.e clock spring)
To achive that one can use the helical cutout/protrusion by
using the taper function inside the helical function.
- use a start radius and an end radius the pitch must be
greater than 0, however, so use a small value say 0.001 or
even smaller.

To have a square twisting cutout running through a shaft
the helical cutout will do as well:

- sketch the profile on the face of the shaft
- sketch a straight line on a plane that is perpendicular
the first sketch' plane. Connect this to the midpoint
of the first sketch and dimension to the desired length

now use the helical cutout but this time before the start
open the 'Helix Options' that is the leftmost button on the
ribbon bar and choose Perpendicular an press OK

- select the line (axis)
- select the sketch (profile)

and proceed as desired. A pitch of axis length and 0.25
turns will twist the cutout by 90 deg.

This will also work for a twisted bar (helical protrusion)

RE: No axe of revolution

/Edit

instead of choosing the Y ref-axis you may also draw
a horizontal line to be used as axis. Make sure it
it is properly centered: connect to the midpoint of
the tube's face and align perpendicular to that face

Thanks Dy,

Excelent information, got the job done thanks to you !!

My way was like in your /edit

Thanks,

Anthony
