I AM CURRENTLY BEGINNING WORK ON A THREE STORY STEEL FRAMED STRUCTURE OF APPROXIMATELY 70,000 SF.  GROUND LEVEL (AT GRADE) IS ALL PARKING AND THE 3RD FLOOR IS ALL MEDICAL OFFICE SPACE.  THE 2ND LEVEL IS SPLIT ABOUT 50-50 BETWEEN PARKING AND OFFICE. I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY THE ARCHITECT THAT THERE IS A HIGH PROBABILTY (DEPENDING UPON TENENTS)THAT THERE COULD BE X-RAY MACHINES, MRI MACHINES, ETC.  ALSO, MINOR SURGICAL PROCEDURES AS WELL AS MINOR OUT PATIENT SURGERY COULD BE PERFORMED.

I HAVE DONE STEEL FRAMED BUILDINGS AS WELL AS STEEL FRAMED PARKING STRUCTURES, BUT I HAVE NEVER MIXED THE TWO IN ONE BUILDING NOR, MORE IMPORTANTLY, ON THE SAME FLOOR LEVEL. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION OF FLOOR VIBRATION FROM THE PARKING TO THE OFFICE SPACE AND HOW IT MIGHT EFFECT ANY MEDICAL EQUIPMENT OR, SAY A SURGEON CUTTING ON SOMEONE.  MY INITIAL THOUGHT WAS TO PROVIDE A COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT FRAMING SYSTEM FOR THE PARKING AREA ON THE SECOND LEVEL (EXPANSION JOINT IN THE SLAB, DOUBLE COLUMNS AT EACH GRID LINE IN THE PARKING AREA (ONE COLUMN STOPPING AT THE 2ND FLOOR TO SUPPORT THE PARKING LEVEL AND ONE CONTINUING UP TO THE 3RD LEVEL TO SUPPORT THE OFFICE SPACE - THIS COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE ISOLATED FROM THE FLOOR SLAB AND THE FLOOR PENETRATION SEALED FOR WATER PENETRATION) THE ONLY COMMON POINT BETWEEN THE PARKING AND OFFICE AREA FRAMING WOULD BE AT THE FOOTINGS - EACH PAIR OF COLUMNS AT EACH GRID WOULD BE SUPPORTED ON A SINGLE FOOTING).  

MY QUESTION - DOES THIS SEEM TO BE A LOGICAL APPROACH GIVEN THE PROPOSED USEAGE OR DOES IT SEEM TO BE OVERKILL?  WILL THIS TYPE OF FLOOR VIBRATION TRANSMIT THRU THE BEAMS AND COLUMNS AT THE SECOND FLOOR? WILL IT TRANSMIT UP THE COLUMNS TO THE THIRD FLOOR? WOULD SIMPLY PROVIDING AN EXPANSION JOINT (AND DOUBLE BEAM AND COLUMN LINE) IN THE SLAB AT THE JUNCTION BETWEEN THE PARKING AND OFFICE AREA AT THE SECOND FLOOR SUFFICE?

ANY EXPERIENCES, GUESSES, THOUGHTS  OR INFORMATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED.  THANKS IN ADVANCE.

P.S.  JUST A THOUGHT - I WOULD LIKE TO MEET THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER WHO PERFORMED THE ANALYSIS ON SANTAS SLEIGH.  SIMPLE THINGS LIKE ESTIMATED LOADINGS (WHAT IS THE WEIGHT FOR A BAG OF TOYS FOR EVERY KID IN THE WORLD), ESTIMATED WIND SPEED AND WIND FORCES (HOW FAST DOES THAT SLEIGH TRAVEL), STRESSES AT THE REINDEER ATTACHMENT POINTS TO THE SLEIGH (FIGURE DRAG AND THE PROJECTED PROFILE FOR THAT HUGE BAG IN THE BACK), etc.  THIS GUY WAS VERY GOOD!!!!  MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!!!
