Spray-Fireproofing on Galvanized Structural Steel

Spray-Fireproofing on Galvanized Structural Steel

Spray-Fireproofing on Galvanized Structural Steel

(OP)
I am trying to determine if hot-dip galvanizing has any affect on the adhesion and quality of sprayed-on fireproofing.  I've looked at the usual resources (galvanizeit.org etc) and haven't come up with anything definitative.  Thanks in advance for the help.

RE: Spray-Fireproofing on Galvanized Structural Steel

I would suggest that you call a local fireproofer or s fireproofing manufacturer such as Grace to find out what prep work is required for galvanized steel. I would think at a minimum, it needs to be degreased.

May require a primer, too.  Some coatings in contact with zinc create a 'zinc soap'.

I believe the ER for the SFRM deals with this.

Approved ICC-ES SFRMs are found in the link below
http://www.icc-es.org/reports/index.cfm?csi_num=07810&view_details=yes

Check Grace's Monokote MK-6 series
http://www.icc-es.org/reports/pdf_files/ICC-ES/ESR-1186.pdf   read section 3.2...consistent with dik's point of view.

An added level of assurance is the requirement for determination of cohesive/adhesive bond in the field by the SI...IBC Sec 1704.11.5
